A decision to make permanent changes to your vision isn’t one to take lightly. It’s critical to research the clinic you’re considering, the technology they use, the surgeon performing the procedure, and ask tough questions before committing to LASIK.

It’s normal to have questions and concerns, and at Corvue, we want to make sure you are comfortable and confident about your decision to undergo laser vision correction. As a starting point, we’ve identified some common misconceptions about LASIK and explained the truth behind each of them.

Myth #1: The LASIK procedure is painful

Fact: LASIK is a mostly painless procedure. Most people are surprised by how quick and painless the whole process is. First, we don’t just let you hop in the chair and go to work. Before the procedure, your eyes will be numbed using anesthetic drops, and you have the option of taking a mild sedative if you are anxious about the process. You might only experience slight discomfort during the procedure, like minor pressure around the eye.

Myth #2: LASIK recovery is long and painful

Fact: You can expect to be back to regular programming within 24 hours of the procedure. Before this, you might experience some mild irritation or discomfort, which can easily be treated with over-the-counter pain medication. You also won’t be able to drive immediately following LASIK, so you will have to arrange transportation to and from the clinic. We don’t recommend looking at screens immediately following the procedure, as you should let your eyes rest and recover. In addition, your surgeon will provide you with detailed post-surgical instructions and schedule you for check-ups to monitor your recovery process.

Myth #3: LASIK is unaffordable

Fact: LASIK may seem like a significant expenditure, but it can save you money in the long run, and you should consider it as an investment in your health and wellbeing. Just think of the money you’ll save on prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses, contacts, contact solutions, etc. If you want to do the math, check out our post on LASIK costs and financing demystified and run your customized calculation. And today, most clinics offer financing to help ease the burden on your bank account. At Corvue, we provide an excellent financing program through Medicard, Canada’s patient financing company. You can finance a portion of your LASIK procedure or the whole surgery, with payment terms from 6 months to 6 years. We’ve had clients with monthly payments as low as $50!

Myth #4: The results are short-lived

Fact: LASIK permanently reshapes the cornea to correct existing vision problems, and the results are long-lasting. Most patients enjoy freedom from glasses and contacts for decades following laser vision correction. Of course, LASIK does not guarantee that your vision won’t change over time. Age-related eye conditions like cataracts, presbyopia, and macular degeneration can still occur and interfere with your vision.

Myth #5: LASIK isn’t safe

Fact:  Complications are infrequent with LASIK, provided you go with a trusted clinic equipped with modern technology and staffed with experienced professionals and surgeons. The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) estimates that infection rates after LASIK are approximately 0.09%. There’s a greater risk of contracting infections by wearing contact lenses!
