Many people looking to improve their vision worry that their age may be a factor in whether they are a good candidate for LASIK surgery. Well, the good news is that there is no specific age limit for LASIK surgery!
The minimum age for LASIK surgery is 18 years old, and the average age that people have LASIK surgery performed is around 45 years of age. However it’s worth noting that many patients have enjoyed the benefits of LASIK after having surgery in their 50’s and beyond as well.
Eye Health is More Important Than Age
Whatever your age is, your surgeon will assess your candidacy for LASIK surgery based on the overall health of your eyes. Eligible candidates must have stable vision, with no changes in their vision prescription for at least 1 year. Candidates also need to have adequate eye health, which means that individuals with severe cataracts or refractive errors may not be eligible for the procedure. Other conditions that may make you ineligible include presbyopia, macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, excessively thick/thin corneas. Your surgeon will also assess your overall health, and ensure that you don’t have any prescriptions or medical conditions that could impair healthing or otherwise impact procedure outcomes.
Monovision LASIK may be better for Older Patients
In many cases, older patients are likely to be recommended for a type of LASIK called monovision. This form of the procedure allows you to correct one eye for better distance vision, and the other eye for better near vision. This can be a great option for patients experiencing issues with both near and far sightedness.
